Summary

One of 44 black and white photographs in an album bound in green suede, believed to have been taken by Sergeant Major Gilbert Payne Mulcahy during World War I. It documents his military service in Egypt, France, Belgium and his return to Australia via Capetown and the Quarantine Station, Point Nepean, 1916-1919.

Image depicting a memorial cross erected to the 2nd Division at Pozieres Ridge, France. The image is undated but it likely to have been taken sometime after August 1916 when the battle of Pozieres Ridge took place. 4,000 Australians were lost during the five-week campaign.
