Summary

One of 139 photographs in an album from World War I likely to have been taken by Captain Edward Albert McKenna. The photographs include the 7th Battalion training in Mena Camp, Egypt, and sight-seeing.

Image depicting Colonel Elliott, Dr Gutheridge and Lieutenant Grills. Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Edward "Pompey" Elliot was the officer in charge of the 7th Battalion. By the end of the war Colonel Elliot had been promoted to a Brigadeer General; however, the denial of a Divisional Command appears to have been a source of bitterness. After the war Elliott was elected to the Senate on twice and receiving the command of the 3rd Division in 1927, along with a promotion to Major General. Elliott was troubled by his memories of the war, and committed suicide in March 1931. Private James Frith Gutheridge was a driver with the 7th Battalion. Pte. Gutheridge returned to Australia on March, 28 1919. Lieutenant Shannon Grills belonged to the 7th Battalion F Company and returned (as a Major) to Australia in 1918.

Description of Content

Four servicemen, three appear to be walking towards the camera, although none of them are looking directly at the camera. The fourth figure is looking slightly over his left shoulder, but also not directly facing the camera, as he walks the other way. In the background is what appears to be a camp site, as evidenced by tents, along with two other figures walking into the distance with their backs to the camera.
