Field Service postcard post stamped 1st Australian Infantry Brigade Field Post Office (1st AUST. INF. BDE. FIELD P.O.) addressed to a Mrs M. Jones, 8 Hastings Rd, Hawthorn. It is date-stamped on the front 31 May 1919, and on the back date-stamped (in Victoria) 16 July 1915.

The 1st Infantry Brigade was part of the initial landing force at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, Türkiye (Turkey), on 24 April 1915, and comprised of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th battalions (NSW). While the sender of the card remains unknown, it was obviously mailed to Victoria through the Brigade's Field post office.

Post stamped on verso 'VICTORIA' with a series of printed sentences from which the sender can select, to ensure information is meeting wartime censorship requirements. Printed text at the verso top explains that additions to the already prepared lines will result in the postcard being destroyed.

Significance

This Field Service post card is sent from the 1st Australian Infantry Brigade post office and dated May 1915, a month after the Gallipoli landings in Turkey where this Brigade served. This document enhances our representation of military life, highlighting the culture of communication of soldiers on active duty.
