Description of Content

Memorial with a cross and plaque at Cape Denison at the top of Azimuth Hill. It commemorates the lives of Lieutenant Belgrave Ninnis and Dr Xavier Mertz who lost their lives in the Antarctic while on the Far Eastern sledging trip with Sir Douglas Mawson, during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911- 1914. The hill on which the cross is standing is 25 metres high at the north end of a narrow rocky outcrop overlooking the old hut (Mawson's Huts). Eric Douglas said 'The Cross was erected on the direction of Sir Douglas in 1914 in memory of Lieut. Physical Description

Standard format lantern slide, consisting of two glass sheets each 3.25 x 3.25 ins (83 x 83mm), one pane bearing a positive transparent image and the other pane protecting the image. Sealed with paper binding strips around the four edges of the lantern slide and internally framed with a black cut-out window mask.
