Summary
Short paper with diagram read to the Royal Society of New South Wales on 2 June 1886 by Lawrence Hargrave. It accompanied a demonstration of his model apparatus. Contains details of his experimental model of a segmented snake with operating mechanism to illustrate the principle of forward motion by undulation. Hargrave states that "...those who see a deep and universal principle outlined by these few pieces of wood and metal may profit by my conceptions, and be perhaps led to devote some time to the investigation of the movements of living matter." This paper is thought to have been part of the Melbourne Observatory Library.
