Summary

Plastic gold medal with black and white ribbon with soccer ball in relief and Brunswick Zebras insignia. This medal was awarded to Nicoletta Centofanti for participating in the 2009 Under 12 Girls soccer season for the Brunswick Zebras.

In 2009, the Brunswick Zebras under 18s girls' soccer team expanded, bringing together girls from diverse backgrounds. They continued to play together in 2010 and formed strong bonds with each other. Through their enjoyment of soccer they also learned more about themselves and their teammates. The black and white Brunswick Zebras Soccer Club jersey also in the collection has its origins in the Brunswick Juventus Soccer Club, founded in Melbourne by members of the local Italian community in 1948.

Physical Description

Gold metallic plate round plastic medal. On obverse is adhered a plastic soccer ball (in half) and a clear plastic disk with the Brunswick Zebras Football Club logo - vertical stripes and a zebra's head in profile. The reverse has a rectangular space for the recipient's name (blank). A black and white ribbon is fastened to the medal by a clip. The medal case has a clear plastic hinged lid and a red felt interior with a stepped well to hold the medal in place and plaque on the front. The underside is black and a gold plastic plaque has the recipient's details inscribed.

Significance

Statement of Significance:
The significance of the medal lies in its representation of a story of cross-cultural cooperation and friendship which create a sense of belonging and community through the game of soccer. It complements the soccer ball and t-shirt already in the collection and the film recording of the the Brunswick Zebras story produced for the Identity exhibition at the Immigration Museum in 2011.
