Summary

Baskets such as this coiled lidded basket by Labidja Dirdi are classic styles from mission times and this particular example is complete with two pandanus buttons. Lidded baskets were very popular items for sale in mission times, and some would have served as food storage containers.

Labidja Dirdi was a senior artist who spent time in her youth at both Gunbalanya and Goulburn Island. Labidja worked mainly in the coiling technique, her forms include lidded baskets and large carrying baskets.Her favourite colour combinations were hot pink and yellow.

Physical Description

Circular basket, coiled, with a lid attached on opposite sides secured with two pandanus 'buttons'. It is formed by horizontal bands of dyed pandanus in varying tones of brown. The lid has open and solid rows of dyed pandanus.
