Summary

This circular basket by Labidja Dirdi has been coiled, and has a lid attached on opposite sides secured with string to two pandanus handles. It is formed by horizontal bands of dyed pandanus in varying tones of brown, purple and orange, the lid has open and solid rows of dyed pandanus. Lidded baskets became very popular items for sale during mission times in Arnhem land as well as in Aboriginal missions in the south. Some of the baskets with their covers would have served as food storage containers.

Labidja Dirdi was a senior artist who worked mainly in the coiling technique. Her forms include lidded baskets and large carrying baskets. Her favourite colour combinations were hot pink and yellow.
