Summary
This open bowl form basket by Doris Nayinggul is very much like early Goulburn Island baskets with its zigzag openwork but it differs in its bold use of colour. Coiling techniques were introduced by the missionary Gretta Matthews to Goulburn Island in the 1920s and spread to the Arnhem Land mainland by direct and indirect means through exchange networks and social and ceremonial connections to mainland groups. Today the coil bundle technique is central to the repertoire of techniques used by Aboriginal women in basket making across Arnhem Land.
Doris makes coiled baskets, often with openwork zigzag structural features.
