Summary

Collecting card illustrating the attack on Paardeberg, a major battle of the Second Anglo-Boer War which was fought in February 1900, with an insert of Lord Robert, Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces. A history of the battle is printed on the reverse of the card, below an advertisement for Price's 'Lightning Brand' Lubrication Oils featuring a illustration of the British clipper ship 'Lightning' that set several speed records on the England to Australia sailing route during the gold rushes of the 1850s.

    Printed on reverse: PRICE'S PATENT CANDLE COMPANY LIMITED; 84/ HONOURS/ &/ AWARDS; PRICE'S LUBRICATING OILS,/ For general purposes./ MOTOR LUBRICANTS,/ CYCLE OILS./ In high-class and well-tested varieties.; Paardeberg, Boer War, February, 1900./ GENERAL Cronje, finding that the British under/ Lord Roberts were advancing against him, raised/ the siege of Kimberley and retreated on Bloemfontein,/ closely pursued by the English. On the morning of the/ 18th of February the Boers were discovered entrench-/ ing themselves in the river bed near Paardeberg/ Drift. An attack on the position was immediately/ ordered, but this, however, was repulsed by the Boers/ with heavy casualties. A bombardment was, however/ kept up continuously by the British, under cover of/ which the troops crept forward. Every night more/ trenches were dug, and early on the morning of the/ 26th the Canadians, who were in the advanced trenches,/ began the attack. When within about 60 yards a/ terrific fire was opened by the Boers, which was returned/ with vigour. At 5.15 a.m. on the morning of Feb. 27,/ General Cronje with his whole force surrendered.
