Summary
This closely twined mat by Garnbaladj Nabegeyo has thin solid bands of dyed and undyed pandanus. During mission times mats were made flat, not conical, in order to render them more saleable in the south. Early mats were twined with plain pandanus but later in the 1950's when colour appeared in baskets it would have also been introduced to the mats.
Garnbaladj was taught by her mother to make baskets. In addition to working in classical styles and techniques she also experiments with open coiling techniques. She has participated in several String World Festivals, has provided consultation to museums and is a strong advocate of fibre arts.
