Item X 31996 Meiurr | Ceramic. Manambu. Middle Sepik River, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. pre 1919

Summary

These kinds of pottery heads are known as 'meiurr' by the Manambu. These were originally over-modelled human skulls, some representing the first ancestors. But these were lost and replaced by wooden examples, although the Yambun replaced some with pottery heads. These were probably copied from the near-by Kwome or Yeschan-Mayo examples. The Manambu place the pottery heads on basketry stands.
