Summary

Hand-drums are known as kwang-gu in Iatmul and are essential in the accompaniment of singing. The handle may be a representation of the beak of a hornbill bird.

A wooden drum with a reptile skin tympanum held in place with plant fibre cord. It has ornate carving and has been painted red and white in parts. The handle is damaged.
