Summary
Hand-drums are known as kwang-gu in Iatmul and are essential in the accompaniment of singing. The bird represented on the handle is probably a hornbill which is a clan totem.

A drum, carved from wood with thick walls. It has an elaborately carved handle depicting a bird and geometrical designs around the base. The drum has lost it tympanum.
