Summary

This is a gable support figure, the peak ends of men's houses often have gable supports, female figures with splayed legs, one at each end of the house. Each time men pass underneath the figure when they enter or leave the men's house, they are reminded of their coming into being, their birth. The back of this woman has a carving of a long tailed animal, possible a lizard or a gecko, and probably a clan totem. 'Property of the Department of Defence' is written on the back of the carving.
