Summary
Postcard featuring a photographic detail of 'Flowerdale' by Sharon Collins, from the project 'Illuminated by Fire: Flowerdale' artwork which was installed at Federation Square, Melbourne from 29 June - 3 July 2011.
As part of the bushfire recovery and community arts initiatives following the Black Saturday bushfires of February 2009, a number of community art projects were funded by Regional Arts Victoria. The 'Illuminated by Fire' project was one of 10 projects showcased in Federation Square from 29 June to 3 July 2011. The artworks were supported by a program of daily talks conducted by those who had direct involvement and experience of the Black Saturday bushfires, including emergency workers, writers, academics, artists and journalists.
The 'Illuminated by Fire: Flowerdale' light installation featured 262 resin hand casts from Flowerdale residents, placed in the form of a tree. The booklet lists each name and location in the installation. The artwork was created by Sharon Collins who was inspired to create a work that symbolised the unity and bond of the Flowerdale residents. The form of a tree, which is a key design element of this installation, was adopted by the Flowerdale community as a symbol of renewal and has been tattooed onto the arms of over 100 local residents.
