Summary
The technique of coiling used to construct this basket was introduced into Arnhem Land by the missionary Greta Mathews who taught it to women at Goulburn Island mission in 1928. From there it quickly spread to the adjacent mainland.
Physical Description
A circular coiled basket with a rigid coiled handle stitched on opposite sides of the body of the basket.
Significance
This basket is the earliest known example of coiling from the mainland.
