Summary

This necklace is strung with very small vertebrae. These were taken from a very young or even a new born shark, these being known by the generic term burrugu. Shark is the biggest sea creature used as a source for materials to thread on string in making necklaces. It also has great totemic significance for particular clans in Arnhem Land and the use of the vertebrae in this way is significant.
