Summary

One of 135 black and white photographs (one detached) contained in a photograph album. Images were taken in the Middle East during World War II.

There are several scenes of village life, photos of war graves and a few touristy photographs of soldiers in the city. There are also pictures of the army in the desert, perhaps there for training, photos of nurses, men carrying stretchers and a photo of a basement signposted ward 2 & 3. The fact that the only shot taken inside a ward shows rows of empty beds is perhaps an indication that the photos were taken either early on in the war or after the war when casualties were less. Photographs of the sea may also help to narrow the location of the photographer. A photograph of hotel tiberias may be a further indication of the origin of the album. Tiberias is located on the shores of Galilee.

Private David Donald Cree Edington, no. vx47139, served in the 2nd AIF [Australian Imperial Forces] 2/14 Infantry Battalion in the 21st Brigade. It is likely, therefore, that he left Australia circa October 1940 and arrived in Palestine circa November 1940 with the rest of the battalion. From 8 June 1941 the battalion was positioned in Syria, where Edington died on 24th June that year, killed in action, aged 32.
