Summary

Confidential annual appraisals, typed on strips of paper. They chronicle an almost complete history of William James Latham's career at Pentridge Prison, from Warder in 1926 to Senior Chief Warder in 1949. The appraisals provide terrific insight into Latham's character, work ethic, professionalism and style. For example in 1927 he was appraised as being 'A capable and trustworthy officer, has a good knowledge of his work and natty in appearance'. In 1934, after four years as a Senior Warder, he is appraised as a 'Very good officer. Capable and energetic. Somewhat of an enigma'. In 1937, his first year at the rank of Chief Warder, he is appraised as being 'Very good. Has a firm and confident control of his division. Shows a good understanding of his charges'. There are a couple of appraisals missing and undated, but by 1949 Latham had achieved the rank of Senior Chief Warder, and in that year was appraised as 'Very good. A reliable and capable officer'.
