The booklet outlines the history of the first Commonwealth of Australia stamps, which appeared 12 years after Federation.

In 2000, Australia Post held an exhibition about the development of the stamp. For that exhibition Richard Breckon and Elizabeth Gertsakis wrote an exhibition catalogue with a similar title to this booklet. The 2013 version contains an imperforate Kangaroo and Map $10 stamp, and 15 Kangaroo and Map stamps reduced and printed on gummed paper with microdate printing.

The Kangaroo and Map series was the first uniform stamp of the Commonwealth of Australia. It replaced the Colonial issues still in use. The stamp design was released in 1912 and was in use until 1950. It was designed by Blamire Young, based on an idea of the then Postmaster-General, Mr Frazer. Young was a British-born Australian artist. The design attracted criticism from the public and the press when it was released, because it did not depict the head of the King of England.
