Summary
A souvenir badge created to commemorate the visit of HRH The Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth, to Victoria in 1958. It was manufactured by local badge maker A.W. Patrick.
The Queen Mother had first visited Australia in 1927 with her husband, the Duke of York (later King George VI), to open the new parliament house. Two further proposed tours during King George VI's reign were cancelled due to his ill health. The Queen Mother's solo tour in 1958 was short - only three weeks, 14 February to 7 March - so the Queen Mother only managed to visit Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Hobart and regional cities were not included in her itinerary.
This badge belonged to Amy Turner, a member of the Uniting Church. Amy had a strong commitment to social justice. Her small collection of badges and mementos captures some of the campaigns she championed, as well as other events that took place in Melbourne during her lifetime.
