Summary

Youth Hostel Association badge, manufactured by W.O. Lewis badge makers in Birmingham, England. The British YHA was formed in 1930, with the stated objective: "To help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside, particularly by providing hostels or other simple accommodation for them in their travels, and thus to promote their health, rest and education." The youth hostelling movement started in Australia in 1939, with the objective: "To provide opportunity for all, but especially young people for education by personal development, fostering friendship and bringing about a better understanding of others and the world around them".

This badge belonged to Amy Turner, a member of the Uniting Church. Amy had a strong commitment to social justice and conservation. Her small collection of badges and mementos captures some of the campaigns she championed, as well as other events that took place in Melbourne during her lifetime.
