Summary
Short sleeved mens t-shirt, printed in a rainbow coloured polyester/cotton blend fabric.
It was purchased by the donor in the mid 1990s at Drop Dead Donkey, a gift shop in Commercial Road, Prahran for approximately $30, and worn to community events such as the Midsumma Carnival and the Pride March. During this time, the six rainbow colours (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet) were recognised as an identifiable symbol of identity and pride for gay men and women, so it was used to emblazon and decorate many different commercial items, such as this shirt.
It was designed and made in Melbourne by Dutch migrant Matthew Flinn (born in The Hague, Netherlands in 1958, died in Melbourne in 2006) who, as part of the Printintin Design Studios in West Melbourne, was known for his bold and colourful textile designs in the 1980s and 1990s.
