Summary
Royal Exhibition Building centenary souvenir envelope postmarked 23 September 1980 at the International Centenary Exhibition, held a the Exhibition Buildings, 23 September - 5 October 1980. The International Centenary Exhibition marked the Exhibition Building's 100 birthday, and it was at the opening of the exhibition on 1 October (exactly 100 years to the day that the first International Exhibition opened) that the building was bestowed the 'Royal' prefix by Princess Alexandra, Queen Elizabeth II's cousin. The anniversary events also saw the creation of a centennial garden and the gifting of the Grollo Fountain to Carlton Gardens.
