Summary
Copy of a medal of Ludovico, Duke of Nevers. The original medal, by Pastorino de' Pastorini (Pastorino of Siena), was made in 1559. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal from the collection of George III (Reg: G3,MantM.16) was exhibited in the King's Library of the British Museum in 1881 and is No. 254 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s. The original medal is in cast lead, this electrotype has been copper plated and toned.
As a child, Ludovico was sent to Paris to inherit the assets left by his grandmother, Anne d'Alençon. He became an important Italian-French dignitary and diplomat in France. In 1565 he married Henriette of Cleves, heiress to the Duchies of Nevers and Rethel (titles which he theafter held), Ludovico is also known as Luigi, Louis and Aloysius.
