Summary

Copy of a medal of Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga (obverse only). The original medal, perhaps by Pastorino of Siena, was made in about 1550. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal from the collection of George III (Reg: G3,MantM.14) was exhibited in the King's Library of the British Museum in 1881 and is No. 256 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s. The original medal is in cast lead, this electrotype has been copper plated and toned. In the 1559 Papal conclave it was thought Cardinal Ercole would certainly be made pope but he was not elected. In 1561 Pope Pius IV named him papal legate to the Council of Trent,
