Summary
Copy of a medal die bearing a portrait of Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585). The original medal, by Gianfederico Bonzagna, was struck in 1572 (although this die copy lacks the artist's initials on the obverse and may be a late copy). This two piece electrotype copy was made circa 1881 by Robert Ready.
From the die for the original medal was exhibited in the King's Library of the British Museum in 1881, No. 327-328 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s. The electrotype silver plated and toned.
