Summary

Official program for the opening ceremony held at Parliament House, Melbourne, on 18 October 1934. The event was presided over by His Royal Highness Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester. Proceedings commenced at 2.45 pm with the arrival of the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir William Irvine and his wife, and concluded at 4.26 pm with his departure. An Inspection of the Guard of Honour was carried out by the Duke of Gloucester immediately upon his arrival at 3.30 pm. He proceeded to the dais at 3.45 where he was introduced to members of the Centenary Celebrations Council. Addresses by the Governor General Sir Isaac Isaacs and the Chairman of the Centenary Celebrations Council Sir Harold Gengoult Smith followed. At 4.00 pm the Duke of Gloucester formally opened the centenary celebrations, and a 21 gun salute was fired. After a march past by members of the Australian Army, Navy Reserve and Air Force, the Duke departed.
