Summary
This catalogue was produced for the sale of Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer's art collection following his retirement. This sale is considered a pivotal auction in the Australian Art market. Both the connoisseurship which led to him amassing such a fine collection and the inflated prices realised at the auction marked a true shift in the recognition of Australian art. This catalogue and the included hand written note from the auctioneer reveal some of the detailed thinking about holding back some pieces and the influence this had on the result.
Physical Description
Eight page catalogue held together with two staples in the spine, seven pages printed in black ink, one detailing when and where the sale to take place, the remainder listing 80 items for sale.
