George Denton Hirst was a successful wine and spirit merchant, partner in the firm Tucker & Co in Sydney, New South Wales, and a keen amateur astronomer. In addition to his own observations, a small group of amateur astronomers met at his home on Sunday mornings to discuss their observations and techniques.
