Summary
When this envelope came into the Museum Collection it contained five invitation to the events surrounding the Federation of Australia in 1901, addressed ti Professor WB Spencer and Mrs Spencer. However the postmark on the envelope reads May 28th, weeks after the offical events. The envelope is from the Commonwealth Celebrations Committee at Parliament House, Melbourne in the same year and as such is as closest example of the type of envelope Federaton invitations would have been sent.
Physical Description
Manilla envelope printed in black ink on front only with the text: On His Majesty's Service, Commonwealth Celebrations, Parliament House, Melbourne. Also bears franking machine imprint which includes: 'Chief Secretary Victoria,' 'frank stamp' and coat of arms confined in a 30mm diameter circle.
