This edge ground axe head is coated with red ochre and decorated with white dots. The stone is set into the wooden haft with resin.
Physical Description
A hafted stone bladed axe painted with natural pigments. The edge ground axe-head is set with resin and the surface is coated with red ochre and decorated with white dots. Vegetable fibre is wound around the handle below the head.
Significance
This axe is amongst a small number of objects donated to the museum by a Mrs A Gunn, presumed to be the novelist Mrs Aeneas Gunn or Jeannie Gunn who went with her husband to run Elsey Station in 1902 and 1903.
