Digital copy of a letter from Henry Chamberlain Russell, Government Astronomer, Sydney Observatory, to George Denton Hirst (1846-1915), Mosman, New South Wales, 12 Nov 1894. Russell thanks Hirst for his observations of the Transit of Mercury on 10 Nov 1894, and that he will forward the results to the Royal Astronomical Society. Russell also proposes nominating Hirst to be elected a member of the Royal Astronomical Society. Russell reports on his own observations of the Transit of Mercury in some detail.

George Denton Hirst was a successful wine and spirit merchant, partner in the firm Tucker & Co in Sydney, New South Wales, and a keen amateur astronomer.
