Summary

A book made for Peter Auty by Flowerdale Primary School students. It describes 'Pete's Patch', a section of the primary school garden dedicated to Pete when the school heard he was sick. Peter spent many years working at the primary school. The cover page has a photograph of children in 'Pete's Patch' with the following poem: 'If we're cranky or tired or dreary, When we're out of sorts or just weary, There's nowhere to match, A trip to Pete's Patch, It's the place where we always feel cheery'. A message to Peter is on the inside cover: Lots of parents and kids and the Darley boys and the teachers had a big working bee in the garden. We cleaned up everything. We made Pete's Patch. There is a big sign saying PETE'S PATCH. Some of your poems are written in Pete's Patch. They are on special pedestals and we can read them when we go into your garden. We have lots of things growing there. We ave a big scarecrow. And he's dressed in a kilt so he look a little bit like you. He has a bushy beard and crazy hair'.

Part of a collection that documents the life of Peter Auty, illustrating his colourful and interesting life, and why he was well loved by his community, recognized in the Victorian Parliament, and awarded two medals posthumously for the important role he played on and following Black Saturday. This collection forms part of the Victorian Bushfires Collection. This large and diverse collection was established following Black Saturday and includes a multi-disciplinary collection of artefacts, images and stories to record the experience and impact of bushfires across Victoria's landscape, ecology and history.
