Summary

An empty, black plastic 35mm film spool for use in a 135 format / 35mm film cartridge. This spool comes from one of the last production runs at the Kodak Australasia Pty Ltd factory at Coburg in 2004.

To make the completed film cartridge, a centre spool would be wound with film before being placed inside a metal shell. This shell was actually a metal label printed with product details at an off-site company but cut and shaped at the Kodak factory. The shell was then capped with two metal caps, one at each end. The assembled film cartridge was then packed into a cylindrical plastic film canister, before being boxed and packaged for bulk shipment.

This product is part of the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005, when the Melbourne manufacturing plant at Coburg closed down.

Kodak manufactured and distributed a wide range of photographic products to Australasia, such as film, paper, chemicals, cameras and miscellaneous equipment. Its client base included amateur and professional photographers, as well as specialist medical and graphic art professionals who used photography, x-ray and other imaging techniques.
