Summary
Alternative Name(s): Match Box Cover, Matchbox Holder
Matchbox and cover, World War I. The cover is made cheaply from folded sheet brass. It features a version of the rising sun motif, with Australia flanked by kangaroo and emy, and is a registered design. The box contains a box of 'Burn-Well' matches made in Belgium.
The matchbox and cover were acquired by the donor's father, Richard Plant, probably from a second-hand shop that specialized in military material in Launceston. Its provenance is otherwise unknown.
Physical Description
Matchbox cover made from brass sheet metal, folded to form three sides, with raised design on both sides of Australia, sun rays (aka bayonets) behind, flanked by kangaroo and Emu, and inscription below within boomerang. Brown-headed wooden matches inside, with discolouration of wood from tip to one third their length. The box is made of wood, with blue paper covering back and 'drawer'.
