Summary

Alternative Name(s): Pamphlet, Guide

Booklet 'Before You Drive', printed in December 1982 on behalf of the Victorian Government. It provides information on gaining a learner's permit, prior to a full driver's licence. It includes 223 multiple choice questions, each with 3-4 answer options. It includes two small advertisements from contemporary road safety campaigns: 'be seen, be safe' and seat belts: 'Remember: wear it right...wear it tight'.

Some of the multiple-choice questions reflect the culture at the time of printing - both in terms of gendered language and behaviour. For instance, in answer to question 144 - 'Is a driver permitted to extend his arm from a moving motor car?', one of the (incorrect) answers is 'Yes, if he wishes to drive with his right hand gripping the roof.'

Proof of identity for the learner's permit at the time required one of: birth certificate, extract of birth entry, passport, naturalisation certificate, immigration certificate or bank books.

The booklet has been used, although its user is unknown.
