Sons of the Sea' was originally composed in 1897 and published by Charles Sheard & Co. Felix McGlennon (1856-1943) was a prolific composer who set up a penny songbook printing company in Manchester, England. In the 1880s he travelled to America, where he enjoyed his first success as a composer. Although not a trained musician, he wrote hundreds of songs, some of them trend-setting. His son Felix was killed in World War I, in 1918.

The music was part of a large collection owned by Mr Harry Albert Turner and his wife Winifred Beatrice Maud (Winnie, nee Hill).

Physical Description

Bound sheet music printed on off-white stock, with black and white cover printed with image of two union flags (union jacks) and a circle within which is depicted a ship on an ocean. Four pages of music, plus covers - back cover also includes music for 'Sons of Our Sailor King'. Scrollwork decorates either side. Name of user hand-written at top right. Binding has been secured with black tape at a later date. Lower right corner curled; some foxing and overall yellowing.
