Summary
A black Bright Star 2117 safelight torch manufactured by Bright Star Industries and branded for use in Kodak factories by Eastman Kodak Company.
According to former Kodak employee, Brian Flynn, safelight torches were an integral tool for many people working in the emulsion areas, which operated in almost complete darkness. Different safelight filters were used in staff torches and in the lighting within the building, to suit the type of product being made or coated. The torches were signed in and out by staff at the beginning and end of their work shift.
This object is part of the Kodak Heritage Collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005, when the Melbourne manufacturing plant at Coburg closed down.
Kodak Australasia Pty Ltd manufactured and distributed a wide range of photographic products to Australasia, such as film, paper, chemicals, cameras and miscellaneous equipment. Its client base included amateur and professional photographers, as well as specialist medical and graphic art professionals who used photography, x-ray and other imaging techniques.
