Summary
American fleet docked at Port Melbourne, 1925. Part of a photographic envelope containing four black and white negatives, and three black and white photographs of the American Fleet at Port Melbourne, 1925. The 43 vessels of the American Fleet arrived in Melbourne during its Australian tour on 23 July 1925. Thousands of people gathered at Port Melbourne, and were treated to an 'excellent display' of American seaplanes which had been 'catapulted' from vessels near the heads. The occasion was soured when a Federal Government party, including the Prime Minister was unable to voyage down the bay to greet the Fleet 'owing to the disgraceful conduct of a few fireman and greasers' making pay demands. The Fleet left Melbourne on 6 August.
The photograph belonged to Miss Elsie Storie of Brunswick, later of Canterbury, a young woman during World War I.
Part of a collection of paper-based ephemera relating to the life of Miss Elsie Storie, a middle-class Melbourne woman who was born around 1895, lived through both wars, and remained in Melbourne all her life.
