The Australian War Memorial holds the same photograph (E00711) which it identifies as depicting 'a scene on the Menin Road near Hooge, looking towards Birr Cross Roads, during the battle on 20 September 1917'. It explains that the wounded on stretchers were waiting to be taken to casualty clearing stations. Soon after the photograph was taken a shell killed most of the wounded on stretchers.
The Battle of Menin Road occured 20-25 September 1917. It was part of the so-called 'Third Battle of Ypres' on the Western Front.
