Illuminated certificate from the Shire of Ballarat commemorating the World War I service of Private William Nairn, dated 8 August 1918. Private Nairn had been killed on 4 July that year.
Physical Description
Illuminated certificate in full colour. Headed 'IN FREEDOM'S CAUSE', it features a central panel of dedication, with a kneeling figure of Australia with an olive branch on cushion below, next to a flame on a tripod and a rifle and helmet representing the absent soldier. A banner 'ALL HONOUR TO THE BRAVE' appears at the right corner. To sides and above, oak leaves are overlaid with banners containing the names of the allied nations of World War I; five flags are shown above, the central of which is the Union Jack.
