Summary

Alternative Name(s): Wedding Handkerchief

This Maltese lace handkerchief is believed to have been carried by Emily Hannah Francis at her wedding in 1913, and later by her daughter Muriel Neredha Sutton in 1936. It is uncertain when it was made but speculated that it may have come from her mother, Mary Speers, and been brought over to Australia as early as the 1870s from Cumbria in the UK, where Maltese lace was popular at the time.

The handkerchief belonged to Emily Hannah Francis, of Garden City, and was part of a collection of 145 souvenir and commemorative handkerchiefs put together by Emily, sent to her by pen friends from around the world, up to her death in 1943.
