Andy Thomas was Australia's first astronaut. He spent 177 days in space on four space flights. He was onboard the space shuttle Endeavour (1996), he spent five months on the Russian Mir Space Station (1998), and visited the International Space Station twice onboard the Discovery (2001 and 2005). On his 2001 visit to the International Space Station Andy Thomas undertook a spacewalk.
Andy was awarded numerous honours during his career, including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, the Yuri Gagarin Medal, and Officer of the Order of Australia. After 22 years as an astronaut, Andy retired from NASA in 2014.
