Summary

An affectionate four page handwritten letter from George Jamieson to his daughter Eleanor on the occasion of her 17th birthday. The letter is dated at 14th February 1876 and was sent from Mudgee, NSW. Eleanor Jamieson married William John Ferris (1855-1917) on 15 April 1885, aged 26. Eleanor's father George was a surveyor.

Part of a collection of photographs and documents relating to William John Ferris (1855-1917). Ferris was born in Parramatta, he married in 1885 and had one daughter and three sons. From 1883 he was an Alderman of Parramatta Council, being elected Mayor in 1890 and 1896. In July 1898 he was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly as the member for Parramatta, he lost his seat in June 1901.

    Hand-written in black ink: ' This to / be given to / My dear Daughter / Ellenor [sic] on her 17th / birthday / Camp Mudgee / 14th February 1876 / My dear Ellenor / On the 20 of this month you / will have arrived at the age / of 17 years, and as I shall not / perhaps have another and better / opportunity of writing as I shift / my Camp in a few days from / Mudgee to a place called Bocoble / about 20 miles from Mudgee on / the Walleranong side, I now take / this favourable opportunity of wishing / you many happy returns of your / birthday. It is thhe ernest [sic] wish and / hope of your father that you / may implore all thats [sic] good, just / & holy and also that you may / Eschew [sic] all that's Evil and bad, and / I pray to God that it may please / him who is the giver of all good / things to spare you to see many / returns of your birthday and that / Each year you may grow in grace / and faith & come nearer to God...[extensive text]'
