Summary

Photograph depicting the funeral cortege of William John Ferris leaving from his home, 'Araglyn', Ross Street, Parramatta, NSW on Thursday 26 April 1917. An article from page six of 'The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate', dated Saturday 28th April 1917 describes the funeral cortege: 'at the head of the sad procession marched a military band...a number of Parramatta bandsmen were included in tho group. Then followed a small knot of veteran volunteers and returned soldiers...Next came the Mayor and the aldermen of Parramatta...The hearse came next- with glass sides, through which could be seen the casket covered by the Union Jack. The helmet and sword of the deceased officer lay, too, upon the coffin. A number of men from the front acted as pallbearers.'

Part of a collection of photographs and documents relating to William John Ferris (1855-1917). Ferris was born in Parramatta, he married in 1885 and had one daughter and three sons. From 1883 he was an Alderman of Parramatta Council, being elected Mayor in 1890 and 1896. In July 1898 he was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly as the member for Parramatta, he lost his seat in June 1901.
