Programme for the 1908 US Fleet Visit to Melbourne from 29th August to 5th September 1908. Physical Description
16 page small format programme with card cover and blue string binding. Inside pages have extensive blue printed text with a decorative red boarder. The front page has a photograph of the USA battleship Connecticut, while the end page has images and instructions for distinguishing Officers of the American Navy. The back cover has an photograph of Government House in Melbourne.
Significance
The 1908 US Fleet Visit was a significant public event for both Melbourne and Australia as it linked Australia firmly with American power in the Pacific. The enthusiastic welcome given to the Fleet by Australians and the array of parties and receptions thrown in their honour, which are outlined in the program, highlight the popular support for the visit which was publicly associated with Australia's self-perception as a strong 'white' nation.
