Single ultramarine 2 Pence stamp attached to envelope. Issued in September of 1850 a part of the "Sydney View" series, this stamp depicts a bale of merchandise, a beehive, and a pick axe and shovel at Sydney cove.
H.W. Johnston notes that this stamp was printed from a plate re-engraved a second time by Mr H.C. Jervis. These are "Plate 3". Position on plate documented. This stamp is "4".
Exact colour and Stanley Gibbons number could not be determine.
This collection was once one of the premier studies of colonial Australasian stamps. Originally bequeathed to the National Gallery of Victoria, the collection was left with the State Library when the Gallery moved to St Kilda Road, in 1978. It was later transferred to the Museum of Victoria.
