Summary
This whip, made by Doug Kite, has no handle and is known as a snake whip. It is made from kangaroo hide and has12 plaits, with a black and tan stripe and a larger diamond pattern near the top. The knob is a Scobie hitch with a plaited loop. Doug has added a flair on the lower edge of the hitch. The cracker is made from blue baling twine. This whip was made for Shane Patterson, the Clerk of the Course at Flemington Racecourse.
Alexander Frederick Scobie, was a famous whip maker who was one of many well-known characters who inspired Doug Kite as a child and young drover, and who shaped the legends that strung along the Birdsville Track from Marree to Birdsville.
Part of the Doug Kite Leather Braiding Collection which consists of handmade leather braided products, hand tools and works in progress made by Doug Kite from 1984 to 2016. The Collection also includes oral histories, video and photographs. The Collection was featured on the ABC Landline program on 7 August 2016.
